RESEARCH: Carol Vernallis Theory

Carol Vernallis Theory

Carol Vernallis was the first person to discover the obvious. Anyway, he found difference between music video and films.

The first thing he realised was that the music clips are very rhythmic, as well as the editing applied to them. Cuts are made on the beats for a greater effect. This means that if the music is fast, the music video also must be to be effective. And same thing with slower ones. Slower the music and beat - slower editing.

Example:

(18 different shots in 10 seconds of Moves like Jagger)

and...

(6 different shots in 10 seconds of  Far Away)

We use jump cuts to compress the time and shorten the storyline in 3/4 minute song. As well as in video breakes, we only show important parts to keep the audience watching and not make them bored.

In many music videos we can see that the camera moves in time with music.
