Analysing Previous Student Video

We watched some of the videos that students have made in the past, I particularly liked one of them and thought it was a very successful one. It's called The World Is Yours. http://vimeo.com/2277407

I think it's successful because:

- these students really thought about the genre they want their video to be- hip hop. There are many conventional things, we always find in hip hop videos, such as:
  • costume, the rapper was wearing. (The hat and the shit). It doesn't always have to be gold chains and rings.
  • location. no fancy houses and cars, but street, which hip hop often is about. they choose location such as the train station, skate park, graffiti places. flats, which reveal the city. and mostly streets of London. Because the song is quite old school, they used props such as mixtapes, and location that links to the old school theme.
  • although the video doesn't have a narrative, it's illustrated with lyrics, for example "the world is yours"- we see the streets, which are part of our big world, and then different people, which makes the illustrates the lyrics because we feel like we're all part of it.
  • footage. the group has collected many footage, which made it easier for them to edit, so they didn't up putting something completely random, but something that actually relates to the song and the meaning they're trying to pass.this only shows they've been really organised and planned every little piece of their work.
  • filming and editing. Some parts are in fast edit, such as cars and people passing which I think makes the video more interesting and fits more with the song, and more is shown, such as time passing by. They used fish eye lens to film this, which I think was a very good idea. It made their clip more unique and still, it links to the genre because many hip hop videos use fish eye lens for closeups.
  • The video represents youth in a good and positive way, we see many different people doing things, being talented and smiling to the camera. It's good that the group wanted to show and represent something.
  • Also, the editing goes perfectly with the music, is sometimes slows down and then speeds up.
It also got 60/60 marks, which proves that their editing and technical skills were approved my the exam board.
