Guardian Article

On our lesson, we read a article wrote by the Guardian newspaper. Digital revolution has changed the bussiness model. Many companies like HMVs are closing down, but huge companies like EMI are also affected by cuts. In United Kingdom, sales went down by 7%, and 10% in USA. Record labels are trying to bring back the old bussiness model, but they are powerless against internet. US grammy Awards winner in category "The album of the year" has only sold 1.4M copies worldwide. Music industry has been almost halved in size, so instead of fighting with internet, they need to make an ally with them. Most of the singles are sold online, but it still isn't enough.

Record labels need to think in future, and some artists came up with ideas how to get more money. For example, Ellie Goulding was working with Nike, and with use of her Facebook page, she invited fans to run with her in a seven different countries. her record label realised the remixed versions of "Lights", and provided a running soundtrack.

Artists are sometimes gaining more money out of "bonuses", like T-shirts. Billy Bragg said "Sometimes I wonder what business I'm in", after he realised that he is gaining comparable amount of money from selling t-shirts.r
